Prince, A Rare Artist Deserving of the Royal Treatment
Throughout the '80s it could never be said that Prince was exactly underappreciated. After all, he was one of the biggest stars of the era and enjoyed plenty of riches and fame because of that status. Even so, I think as a musician he has always been miscast as a quintessential pop star, short on substance and long on style. But do you know what cures that particular misconception? Just listen to the music. If you do, I mean really take the time to experience Prince's best material, I defy you to come away with anything less than a solid admiration for the man's musical talent, vision and conviction. As a singer, guitarist, composer and performer, there has perhaps been no artist more single-minded about seeking perfection. A lot of the time that really shows, particularly in his best work. So let the arguments begin: imbibe of my list of the top 10 Prince songs of the '80s, and delight in the resulting intoxication.
