Signs of the Apocalypse on My TV Screen? Imagine That

Tuesday February 6, 2007
Please excuse my bitter cynicism tonight, but you must understand that a glimpse of the apocalypse just passed across my TV screen. I know, I know, that happens on some level nearly every night these days, what with celebrity worship, reality TV gone wild and many other debilitating aspects of American culture. But that's another rant entirely. This rant centers around a TV ad for a fast food restaurant chain (which will go unnamed, but let's just say the mascot is a redhead... and female). Featured prominently throughout the sunny ad is, of all '80s songs, Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun".

Now, I ask everyone to pause for just a moment to let that devastating truth sink in. The Violent Femmes, one of the most unique, maverick independent rock bands of all time, not to mention the '80s, serving as the soundtrack for Biggie fries? Has the world no sense of justice? Has capitalism no sense of shame, or even decorum? Well, I'll let you answer those rhetorical questions; meanwhile, I'll just sit here and dab my tears of rage with my tattered sleeves. Too dramatic? OK, I'll leave you with this: "When I'm-a walkin', I strut my stuff, I got me a combo meal..."
