A Monday Toast For Those of Us Who Like a Side of Geography With Our Music

Monday February 16, 2009
I don't know how many gainfully employed geographers there are out there if any, but when I was a kid I was such a geography hound it just may have frightened my family and friends. Any kind of map, list of capitals, or nation trivia could keep me enraptured for hours, back when I actually had a sizable attention span. Well, today I stumbled upon a like-minded blog feature from last month courtesy of the Seattle Weekly, and I felt compelled to muse about my secret cartographic obsession. In the process of compiling all the lists I've created for this site, it's nice to see someone else take inspiration from an unlikely source.

But what real reason do I have to mention this? Why, self-promotion, of course. A while back I engaged in a flurry of geographical '80s music list-making, so on the off chance that anyone out there knows the capital of Albania (Tirana) and also digs music, check out some of my teachers' pet '80s lists below. By all means, don't delay this chance for immediate edification.

I, too, am a geography hound, and I’m not sure that my love for world music didn’t stem from that somewhat. I mean, once you’ve memorized the national flowers of every country in Africa, you might as well start learning something about their music, right?
