This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Alien"
Usually considered a '70s classic rock/soft rock act that had fizzled by the flashier '80s, Atlanta Rhythm Section actually produced a modest hit in 1981's "Alien" that deftly bridged the two decades. Making the Top 30 on the Billboard pop charts, the track claims the distinction as the group's last grasp at pop success, but it's a pretty ambitious one. Clocking in at more than five minutes, the tune allows space for the lead guitar of Barry Bailey to lay down a Southern rock groove that never overshadows Ronnie Hammond's smooth, laid-back vocal delivery.
ARS has never received a tremendous amount of respect for being a complete band - instead saddled with a reputation as a staid, studio-based outfit - but an underrated effort like this one quickly squelches that kind of talk. A reliance on understated keyboards has perhaps also reduced the group's perceived rock music credibility, but there are few artists of the late '70s and early '80s that proved themselves more adept with pleasant grooves and high harmonies. Even better, thoughtful songwriting remains a consistent staple of the group's music, as evidenced by this empathetic tune as well as the creative concepts of better-known hits like "Imaginary Lover" and "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight." Try this one out for some weekend chill-out listening, and I think you'll be pleasantly satisfied if not a touch surprised.
