This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - The Mighty Lemon Drops' "Into the Heart of Love"

mightylemon.jpg Even as late as 1989, tuneful and driving rock music outside the realm of hair metal occasionally arose and received something more than modest radio airplay. But it sure as hell didn't happen very often, as the multitudes of jangle pop and other types of radio-friendly college rock bands that had emerged by the mid '80s typically remained largely unheard by the masses as the decade drew to a close. After all, alternative rock had not yet established itself as a commercially viable genre (ah, the good ol' days).

This track from one of England's finest and most underrated late-'80s early alternative rock bands certainly stands as a prime example of the kind of song that should have stood out as the exception to the rule. But unfortunately, other than making a Top 10 appearance on the still-fringe, pre-Nirvana modern rock charts of the time, the pleasures provided by this ear candy-plus gem of a tune remained too often undiscovered. I certainly speak for myself as one of the many uninitiated, as I was probably listening to Damn Yankees or worse when this song was out. Oh, the mistakes of youth that weren't even really all that fun when I was making them.
